FKCaps: Exciting – If Imperfect – Topre Keycaps Option for Fujitsu Realforce Keyboard

TL;DR: If you like keyboards with Topre switches, there are few aftermarket keycap options. FKCaps has a Minitel-inspired version with a great URSA profile, but the set’s color is off and is inexplicably missing a few keys for my Realforce PFU keyboard – one of the few Topre options. Topre keyboard switches have some of the qualities of cheap rubber dome keyboards and some of the best mechanical switches. They’re quiet like the cheap stuff, tactile like mechanical switches, and smoother and often significantly more expensive than both combined. There aren’t that many keyboards that use them, with most coming …

Quick Take: HP OmniBook X Flip 16

I need to get through my backlog before the new product barrage at CES! This is HP’s OmniBook X Flip 16, an Intel-powered 2-in-1. Highlights: Cons: At over 4 lbs it’s too bulky for use as a handheld tablet, but fine as a budget digitizer with the pen, or for use in tent mode for media consumption or presentations. Overall, it’s a solid value in the maxxed out configuration I’m testing, and an absolute bargain in mid-tier configurations on sale in the $700’s. Entry models start in the $500’s and the performance hit is acceptable but you lose the gorgeous …

Seagate Has An Astro Bot 5TB Game Drive Because Gaming is Supposed to be Fun.

If you have a modern PlayStation and you’re adding games this holiday season, you may be running out of storage. Sure, you could buy an NVMe SSD drive for the fastest solution, but large capacities are expensive, and thanks to the ongoing AI datacenter memory shortage, getting more expensive every day. Hard drives are a great way of adding significant capacity at more reasonable prices, but they suffer from being boring. Seagate has solved this problem with a Limited Edition Astro Bot Game Drive. It typically costs around $20 more than the plain white version, but adds more than $20 …

LG MyView Smart Monitor: A 4K TV for Those Who Also Need a Premium PC Monitor

LG’s MyView Smart Monitor combines a 32″ 4KTV, a 32″ PC monitor, and an OS that theoretically allows you to do light computing. This is not a random combination, or simply about space saving, it reflects the reality that work, personal computing, and entertainment share key technical similarities and are often done in a shared space. I spent a few months with the 32” MyView Smart Monitor (32SR85U) to see how well LG has addressed each use case individually, whether a converged product makes sense, and, if so, whether LG’s approach is the right one. This review will focus on …

Sonos Play:1 – Hands On

Sonos sent over a pair of Play:1 speakers for review. In my review of the Sonos PLAYBAR I found too many setup limitations, but I absolutely love the Play:1's. A single Play:1 fills any small or medium sized room with rich, clear sound, and it serves as a perfect entry point to building a full multi-room, multi-source music system. My full report for Current Analysis clients is up; here's an excerpt:  Sonos notes that multi-room audio sales have been rising 80% year-over-year, fueled by streaming music. With most consumer electronics categories losing ground as consumers put more of their money into …

Onkyo Announces First MHL A/V Receiver

There is no indication of price or availability, so this "announcement" is almost comically vague, but it is interesting nonetheless. For the uninitiated, MHL is a standard that aims to simplify getting content from mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) while keeping the devices charged. The MHL folks were smart enough not to come up with their own unique connector/cable; instead it uses the HDMI or microHDMI connectors, and includes HDMI backwards compatibility. It looks like Onkyo's reciever will pop up windows showing you what content is available on the device, allowing you to easily push that content on to the …

Roku Goes Retail

It certainly took them long enough, but Roku is finally graduating from online-only sales to retail. It wasn't doing too badly in the old business model – Roku's status as the least expensive and easiest streaming media box allowed it to rack up over a million units sold. Still, Roku always seemed something like a secret that only technically savvy people knew about – and that is not the target demographic for a product designed for simplicity. No, the ideal retail channel ought to be something like Target. Or Best Buy: Roku XD player is available for purchase at Best …
