Motorola, Lenovo’s phone brand, has been profitably moving upmarket over the past few years, but nothing says premium like a fold-larger phone. The moto razr was a folding smartphone pioneer, and the compact foldable has been refined year after year. I have been testing an EU razr 70 ultra review unit from Motorola with a real wood rear panel, and it continues to excel in its ability to run full Android apps on the front display. That enables you to put your shopping list there and not open your phone and get distracted by video in the middle of the supermarket. For example. Not that this has ever happened to me. OK, it has. Quick email, map, and calendar checks are also a good use for the exterior screen, again without getting sidetracked.

Despite success in foldables — the base model razr is the best-selling foldable in the U.S. — Motorola stayed out of the fold-larger productivity/entertainment space until now. The moto fold has been out in Europe for a month or so and now comes to the U.S. sold direct or as a T-Mobile carrier retail exclusive. T-Mobile kindly sent over a review unit of the “Blue” version, which is really nearly black.
Highlights of the razr fold include a huge 6,000mAh battery, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC, 8.1″ internal super-bright display, and a brand-new camera system. The camera has gotten top DXO marks, and while I have just begun testing this unit, I’ve already spent a few hours pixel peeping with units at CES, MWC, and at the razr launch in Hollywood. The main camera is a huge improvement over past Motorola phones — even the non-folding variety — and the periscope zoom offers welcome imaging flexibility.

I’ll post more on performance and camera quality when I’ve had more time with it, but I can already tell that it is a foldable battery life champ. I’m also a fan of Motorola’s minimalist take on Android, though there’s a lot of (thankfully removable) games and bloatware on the T-Mobile version.
Like all fold-larger phones, the razr fold is not cheap, though at $1700 the razr fold is actually the least expensive big foldable you can buy from a carrier in the U.S. The razr fold is $100 less than Google’s Pixel Fold and $300 under Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7. Disclosures: Motorola sent the razr 70 ultra for review, and T-Mobile sent the razr fold for review.
